Last Post of 2017

A few articles about Oumuamua, the “Interstellar Cigar”:
This article discusses the research that Abe Springer, a professor in the School of Earth Sciences and Environmental Sustainability, and Casey Jones, a master’s candidate studying environmental science and policy are working on.  Their work is tracking the water that feeds Roaring Springs at the Grand Canyon.  Keep up the good work Abe and Casey!  #NAUStrong.
Star Wars:

Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi came out on the 19th.  I thought it was a great movie and worth a watch (Disclaimer, I am a Star Wars fan, but not a super fan).
Off Campus Life:
Time to hit the slopes!  Snow Bowl is open (just make sure you don’t eat the snow, yellow or white)!

If you’re away from Flagstaff (like yours truly) take a look at the above

article.  You can find NAU Football and Basketball games for free with the

TuneIn app.  Go Jacks!!!
The Lumberjacks have bagged themselves a Cougar!  Mike Marlow, the former Deputy Athletic Director at WSU (Cougars) was announced as NAU new Vice-President of Intercollegiate Athletics at NAU on Dec. 13th.  Much success, Mr. Marlow, we’re all counting on you!  #NAUStrong

Men’s Basketball 3-10, (0-0):

The Jacks lost to South Dakota (77-90) in Flagstaff before taking a trip to Florida.  The Jacks split their game sin the sunshine state losing to South Florida (56-70) but redeeming themselves against Jacksonville University (83-72).  Up next, Big Sky play begins in Flagstaff as the Jacks take on Montana on Thursday and Montana State on Saturday. Go Jacks!!!
Women’s Basketball 3-8, (0-0):

Football (7-5, 6-2):

Update:  Coach Sours apparently will be staying in the wake of Lisa Campos accepting the Athletic Director position at UT San Antonio.
NAU Head football coach Jerome Sours is retiring after the end of this

season.  The announcement was made on Tuesday to ensure that the university

and the community had an opportunity the thank coach Sours over the

remainder of the season.  Coach Sours is the winningest coach in Big Sky

history (118 wins (81 Conf. wins) and counting).  I remember playing

football in Arizona in the late 90’s and Coach Sours visiting our

practice.  We didn’t talk or anything, but when I saw this article it did

remind me of that time and how, for most recent NAU grads, they’ve never

known an NAU football program without Coach Sours.  We wish you the best

Coach, and thank you for all the great memories you’ve given us.  You truly

are a Lumberjack Legend!

Well, that was embarrassing.  The Jacks laid an egg in the Skydome in the playoffs, losing to the University of San Diego 10-41.  Obviously not the way you want to end a season, but that’s just what happened.  Thank you, Jacks for a great season! Go Jacks!!!

Women’s Soccer (9-10-1, 4-6-1):

They came up short (0-1) against Portland State in the Big Sky Championships.  Great season ladies, we are proud of you! Go Jacks!!!

NCAA National Champions!

This is a special event for NAU and I feel that it deserves special recognition.  The Men’s Cross Country team won the NCAA National Championship on November 19, 2016!  This was a classic underdog story, and the first National Championship for the Lumberjacks (in any sport)!

In my posts, I continually neglected the Cross Country team in favor of Football, Volleyball, etc. and for that I apologize.  The Men’s XC team finished 1st in 7 of 8 events this year (including Nationals).

Way to go, gentlemen, we are proud of you!  #NAUStrong #NationalChamps
