Back from the dead

Tau Beta Pi (TBP) – Arizona Gamma (AZG) Chapter:

https://www.tbp.org/off/DisplayChapterInfo.cfm?ID=8

I was saddened to hear that the NAU Chapter of Tau Beta Pi (Engineering Honor Society) died in 2015 and was revived in 2016. I remember joining during the Spring semester of my senior year, having rejected several offers to join sooner. Now that I have graduated and have a family of my own, I wish I had been more involved in TBP when I was at NAU, but am proud to be able to tell my family that I was a member when in school! Unfortunately, there isn’t a website for AZG, but there is contact info for officers located in the website above.

AZG will be hosting this year’s District Convention on April 6th in Flagstaff.

Oumuamua:

A few articles about Oumuamua, the “Interstellar Cigar”:

Distance: 320,541,600 mi from Earth (disclaimer: these are my personal calculations, and may be off)

(For reference: Mars is 141,600,000 miles, Jupiter is between 365,000,000 and 601,000,000 miles from Earth)

Update: Coach Sours apparently will be staying in the wake of Lisa Campos accepting the Athletic Director position at UT San Antonio.

NAU Head football coach Jerome Sours is retiring after the end of this

season. The announcement was made on Tuesday to ensure that the university

and the community had an opportunity the thank coach Sours over the

remainder of the season. Coach Sours is the winningest coach in Big Sky

history (118 wins (81 Conf. wins) and counting). I remember playing

football in Arizona in the late 90’s and Coach Sours visiting our

practice. We didn’t talk or anything, but when I saw this article it did

remind me of that time and how, for most recent NAU grads, they’ve never

known an NAU football program without Coach Sours. We wish you the best

Coach, and thank you for all the great memories you’ve given us. You truly

are a Lumberjack Legend!

Well, that was embarrassing. The Jacks laid an egg in the Skydome in the playoffs, losing to the University of San Diego 10-41. Obviously not the way you want to end a season, but that’s just what happened. Thank you, Jacks for a great season! Go Jacks!!!

The bad luck continues for the Jack (Murphy) and the Jacks.  They lost both games at the Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational 66-76 to Hampton and 71-77 UC Irvine/Rider, respectively.  They are getting somewhat better though, as these losses have been the closest final scores this season.  Hopefully the Jacks can get that oh-so-elusive first win this weekend with games at Santa Clara tonight and at Bakersfield Saturday.  Go Jacks!!!

History

Pearl Harbor –
The first article above (NAU News, 2009) discusses NAU Alum Virgil Hengl (December 3, 1921 – August 1, 2011) who witnessed Pearl Harbor and later received a Master’s degree in education from NAU.
The second article discusses the Navajo Code talkers, who were an integral part of the US victory in the Pacific during WWII.
Science –
NAU Wildlife Endocrinologist Kathleen Hunt is using some novel ideas to study baleen whales.
This was an interesting article from NPR about the history of Smallpox, and although it’s not directly related to NAU, Dr. Paul Keim from NAU is quoted at the end of the article.
Great to see NAU working with Willow Bend Environmental Education Center to provide exposure to science to families that may not be able to experience these types of educational experiences on their own.
Campus Life –
Per the AZ Daily Sun Article above, NAU’s Faculty Senate approved Sanctuary (re-named “Universal Safety” for fear of funding reprisal) for NAU.
Also, stumbled upon the website for the NAU School of Communications news (Northern AZ Today, http://www.naztoday.com/site/about.html) and thought I should share, just in case anyone was looking for a local news source.
Winter Sports Season:

Basketball (Men) 2-8 (0-0) The rough start continues for the Jacks, as they’ve dropped 8 of their first 10 (that’s 80% of their games for you Mathematicians and Engineers out there 😉 ). They will look to get their first win in December as they play and Arkansas – LittleRock (Dec 14th) at the Skydome, then go to West Texas to face the UTEP Miners.  Go Jacks!!! #NAUStrong

Basketball (Women) 4-4 (0-0)  The Lady Jacks get back to 0.500 on the year with a win over Denver.  Sunday they take on the New Mexico State Aggies in Flagstaff. (Go Lady Jacks!!!) #NAUStrong
