Apologies

My apologies, it’s a crazy few weeks in the Zombie household: funerals, car accidents (in that order), vacation, vehicle repo (we’re doing the repo-ing), missed trips.  Writing the blog hasn’t even been on the stove the last few weeks, let alone the front (or back burner).  One of the disadvantages of a one-zombie-band is that, if your zombie goes down, so does your whole band.

Very Low Frequency

Science:

https://www.yahoo.com/tech/nasa-just-discovered-bizarre-bubble-around-earth-humans-183729777.html

Pretty cool article about how Very Low Frequency (VLF) radio waves could potentially be used to help protect astronauts and equipment someday.  This (very loosely) relates to NAU as follows:  In order to test this application for VLF radio waves, a controlled laboratory-like environment was needed.  I happen to work in such a facility as my day job (I moon-light as a blogger/writer/tech expert/latin lover, etc.).  Anyway, this project went to my coworker (at the time), and they were working on it.  On a few occasions, I was asked to help with parts of this effort (I’m the NAU tie-in for this).  When my coworker unexpectedly left one day, I had to fill in on this project until his replacement was found.

The Final Frontier

I was wondering what I was going to write about today, and then I found an article that just drew me in and wouldn’t let go:

Science:
http://www.newsweek.com/event-horizon-telescope-black-hole-image-583461
Scientist around the globe (although non from NAU, that I can tell) believe they will have the first images of a black hole early next year.  This doesn’t directly involve NAU, but is cool none-the-less.
http://www.businessinsider.com/saturn-encealdus-hydrothermal-vent-aliens-2017-4
Another non-NAU article, but also pretty cool.  NASA’a Cassini spacecraft has provided data that supports the idea that one of Saturn’s moons is producing hydrongen gas, making it a good candidate for supporting life.

Technology:

Big Science News…and the End is Near

IGP-egr-students-SMALLCampus Life:

http://news.nau.edu/frontier-set/

This article describes how NAU has been selected to be a part of the Frontier Set, which selects Universities that have shown promise in getting students from under-represented areas (minorities, first generation college students, etc.) to graduate and provides the universities with more resources to focus on increasing these graduation rates.  It is sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.  Keep up the great work, Jacks! #NAUStrong

http://www.12news.com/news/local/arizona/arizona-a-dark-sky-oasis-in-a-world-of-light-pollution/409491241

This 12news articles talks about how Flagstaff is a low light pollution area.  Before you leave the Flagstaff area, you should really go out and look at the night sky on a clear night.  It is truly amazing, which leads (kind of) to my next article:

Science:

http://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/scientists-spot-seven-earth-sized-exoplanets-around-nearby-dwarf-star-180962255/

Big news from outer space.  Scientist discovered 7 Earth-sized exoplanets orbiting their small sun (TRAPPIST-1) which is a mere 39 light years (the distance light travels in 1 year, meaning the star is 235 trillion miles away) from Earth.  As the article says, this discovery will be researched for years.  This isn’t really NAU related, but I figured it was big enough to get mentioned.

Winter Sports Season:
Basketball (Men) 7-20 (4-10): The end is near!  Only 4 more games to go.  The Jacks will be on the road against Sacramento and Portland State, and then finish out the season at home against Idaho and Eastern Washington.  Go Jacks!!! #NAUStrong

Basketball (Women) 7-18 (3-11):  Only 4 more games for the Ladies.  They’ll be at home to take on Sacramento and Portland State, and then on the road to take on Idaho and Eastern Washington.  Go Lady Jacks!!! #NAUStrong

Swimming and Diving: (3-7): The Aqua-Jacks were in 1st place at the end of Day One of the Big Sky Champioships with 120 pts. Keep up the good work, Jacks! #GoJacks  #NAUStrong

Tennis (Men) 1-4:  The bad luck continues for the Jacks, who find themselves sitting at 1-4.  Up next, they’re headed to the Air Force Academy, where they’ll take on Air Force, and then Seattle (at Air Force). #GoJacks  #NAUStrong

Tennis (Women) 3-2 (1-0): The women have been on a tear lately, winning 3 straight.  Up next, they’ll take on Southern Utah and Portland State in Flagstaff.  #GoJacks  #NAUStrong

Track and Field:  Still need to figure out a good way to display Track and Field results.  Up next, the 2017 Big Sky Indoor Championships in Pocatello, Idaho. #GoJacks  #NAUStrong

Shooting for the Stars

Campus Life:
Great article from AZ Daily Sun, about NAU’s new PhD program in Astronomy and Planetary Science.  Having been in the works for the past 10 years, the PhD program is finally up and running and should serve to boost NAU’s status as a research university.  Way to go Jacks!
Science:
This NAU News articles explains how NAU Professor Scott Anderson is working with a team to de-bunk a mass extinction theory.
Winter Sports Season:
Basketball (Men) 3-13 (0-4): The Jacks are still looking for that elusive first conference win (and first win in 2017). Up next are Sacramento St. and Portland St. at home. Go Jacks!!! #NAUStrong
Personal note: At least we’re ranked ahead of the UTEP Miners (who we beat earlier this year) in RPI (NAU is #345, UTEP is #347).

Basketball (Women) 5-9 (1-2):  The Lady Jacks are following in the Men’s’ footsteps, apparently, and have dropped 2 straight games after winning their conference opener.  Hopefully they can get back on track on the road against Sacramento St. and Portland St.  Go Lady Jacks!  #NAUStrong!

Swimming and Diving: (3-5): The Aqua-Jacks(?) have been doing their thing since September, and will keep going through March.  They’ve picked up 1 win (Oregon St.) and 1 loss (UofA).  Keep up the good work, Jacks! #GoJacks  #NAUStrong
