http://www.ncaa.com/news/football/article/2017-09-12/fcs-football-northern-arizona-legend-jerome-souers-makes-2017-his

NAU Head football coach Jerome Sours is retiring after the end of this season.  The announcement was made on Tuesday to ensure that the university and the community had an opportunity the thank coach Sours over the remainder of the season.  Coach Sours is the winningest coach in Big Sky history (113 wins (77 Conf. wins) and counting).  I remember playing football in Arizona in the late 90’s and Coach Sours visiting our practice.  We didn’t talk or anything, but when I saw this article it did remind me of that time and how, for most recent NAU grads, they’ve never known an NAU football program without Coach Sours.  We wish you the best Coach, and thank you for all the great memories you’ve given us.  You truly are a Lumberjack Legend!

2 days until NAU returns to the Skydome to try to keep their Big Sky winning “streak (1 win)” going!  The Jacks got that ever so elusive first win (in Big Sky Conference play, no less) against the Cal Poly Mustangs last week! Go Jacks!!!

The Final Frontier

I was wondering what I was going to write about today, and then I found an article that just drew me in and wouldn’t let go:

Science:
http://www.newsweek.com/event-horizon-telescope-black-hole-image-583461
Scientist around the globe (although non from NAU, that I can tell) believe they will have the first images of a black hole early next year.  This doesn’t directly involve NAU, but is cool none-the-less.
http://www.businessinsider.com/saturn-encealdus-hydrothermal-vent-aliens-2017-4
Another non-NAU article, but also pretty cool.  NASA’a Cassini spacecraft has provided data that supports the idea that one of Saturn’s moons is producing hydrongen gas, making it a good candidate for supporting life.

Technology:

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/cipherloc-announces-collaboration-northern-arizona-040100979.html

This Yahoo Finance article talks about how NAU and CipherLoc Corporation are partnering to advance the security in data protection and authentication fields.  Way to go Jacks!

Track and Field:  Still need to figure out a good way to display Track and Field results.  Up next, the Mt. SAC Relays and Bryan Clay Invitational (both in California) starting on April 6th. 13.  #GoJacks  #NAUStrong

Golf:  The Jacks finished 13th, 14th, and 14th at the PING/ASU Invitational.  Up next is the Big Sky Championships April 21-23.  #GoJacks  #NAUStrong

Shooting for the Stars

Campus Life:
Great article from AZ Daily Sun, about NAU’s new PhD program in Astronomy and Planetary Science.  Having been in the works for the past 10 years, the PhD program is finally up and running and should serve to boost NAU’s status as a research university.  Way to go Jacks!
Science:
This NAU News articles explains how NAU Professor Scott Anderson is working with a team to de-bunk a mass extinction theory.
Winter Sports Season:
Basketball (Men) 3-13 (0-4): The Jacks are still looking for that elusive first conference win (and first win in 2017). Up next are Sacramento St. and Portland St. at home. Go Jacks!!! #NAUStrong
Personal note: At least we’re ranked ahead of the UTEP Miners (who we beat earlier this year) in RPI (NAU is #345, UTEP is #347).

Basketball (Women) 5-9 (1-2):  The Lady Jacks are following in the Men’s’ footsteps, apparently, and have dropped 2 straight games after winning their conference opener.  Hopefully they can get back on track on the road against Sacramento St. and Portland St.  Go Lady Jacks!  #NAUStrong!

Swimming and Diving: (3-5): The Aqua-Jacks(?) have been doing their thing since September, and will keep going through March.  They’ve picked up 1 win (Oregon St.) and 1 loss (UofA).  Keep up the good work, Jacks! #GoJacks  #NAUStrong

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!
The CNN link above, although not related to NAU, seems pretty cool, so I thought I would put it here just in case anyone is interested (or out there ;-)).
Campus Life:
Interesting article, this talks about how NAU is one of 8 universities using adaptive learning to improve the learning experience.  It would seem that a large shift in education practices/methodology is underway.  Keep up the good work NAU!
Off Campus Life:
I saw this article about J. Lawrence Walkup’s wife, Lucy, and how she has impacted the Flagstaff community, and thought I would share.
This article talks about the development of Flagstaff and the economic impact that NAU has on Flagstaff.  Glad to be some of the $2 Billion a year (although I haven’t been there in a few years) that NAU brings to Flagstaff.
Winter Sports Season:
Basketball (Men) 3-11 (0-1): The Jacks started conference play with a 93-80 home loss to Southern Utah.  The Jacks will be on the road against North Dakota and Northern Colorado. Hopefully they can turn it around in 2017. Go Jacks!!! #NAUStrong

Basketball (Women) 5-7 (1-0):  The Lady Jacks started Conference play nicely, as they beat Southern Utah 77-68 in OT on the 31st. Up next are home games against North Dakota and Northern Colorado.  Go Lady Jacks!!! #NAUStrong

Swimming and Diving: (2-4): The Aqua-Jacks(?) have been doing their thing since September, and will keep going through March.  I’ll work on some more detailed results in the future, as the NAU Athletics website (http://www.nauathletics.com/sports/wswimdive/2016-17/schedule) is a little short on some of the details. #GoJacks  #NAUStrong

Double Duty

http://news.nau.edu/bald-bright-beautiful/#.WEGwrHm7q70

Science – The above article discusses how UA, NAU, and Lowell worked together to characterize small, near Earth asteroids.  Pretty cool how NAU and Lowell assisted UA in this study.

Basketball (Men) 2-6 (0-0) The rough start continues for the Jacks, as they’ve dropped 6 of their first 8. They will look to turn things around as they play at San Diego (Sat. @ 2), CSU Bakersfield (Mon), and Arkansas – LittleRock (Dec 14th) at the Skydome.  Go Jacks!!! #NAUStrong

Basketball (Women) 3-4 (0-0)  The Lady Jacks have fallen on hard times, losing 4 of their last 5.  Tomorrow they take on Denver in Flagstaff. (Go Lady Jacks!!!) #NAUStrong

http://knau.org/post/nau-consider-sanctuary-campus-status#stream/0

Campus Life – Per Gillian Ferris’ article above, NAU will decide if it wants to become a Sanctuary Campus.  A little more detail on the Sactuary Campus designation can be found at the AZ Daily Sun link below:

Fall Sports Season:

Football – 5-6 (4-6)  The Jacks lost their last game of the season, 48-21 to Southern Utah University at the Skydome.  Truly a disappointing end to a season that started out with so much promise.  Thank you to the coaches and players, for all you hard work this season!

Soccer – 10-7-5 (5-2-3) The Lady Jacks did very well, but were unable to bring home the hardware, losing a penalty kick shootout against EWU for the Big Sky Soccer Championship.  We are proud of you, Lady Jacks!  Way to go!

Volleyball – 24-8 (12-4)  The Lady Jacks also were not able to bring home the hardware from the Big Sky Championship, losing to North Dakota, 3-0.  We are proud of you, Lady Jacks!  Way to go!

Cross Country (Men’s) – as discussed in a separate post ( https://gojacks.wordpress.com/2016/12/02/ncaa-national-champions/ ), are NCAA National Champions!

Cross Country (Women’s) – Won the Big Sky, but then finished 10th in the NCAA Mountain Region Championships.  We are proud of you, Lady Jacks!  Thank you for a great season!
